nso: Eschenbach conducts Beethoven's Fourth Symphony / Mozart's Oboe Concerto
Music Event Hosted by The Kennedy Center
Christoph Eschenbach's second program of his late-season trio includes Beethoven's splendid Symphony No. 4, Mozart's fascinating Oboe Concerto featuring NSO Principal Oboe Nick Stovall, and overtures to Rossini's William Tell and Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
NSO Music Director Gianandrea Noseda's notes on the program:
"Eschenbach opens this program with Rossini’s irresistible Overture to William Tell before moving on to Mozart’s Oboe Concerto, which has an interesting story to it. Not long after its premiere, the concerto vanished from history. It was discovered more than a century later that Mozart had recycled its score into a flute concerto in order to “complete” a commission, and its true identity was quickly restored—though the derivative flute concerto also remains quite popular!
When I conducted the NSO in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet in 2016, Principal Oboe Nick Stovall and his section brought powerful contour and emotion to each performance— particularly in a tender closing moment that relies on the oboe’s high register to convey the lovers’ tragedy. As such, this Mozart should be a splendid showcase for him. After the Shakespearean Overture to Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Eschenbach concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4—a brighter work by the composer, but a heroic one nonetheless. "
